Is the big 4-0 looming on your horizon? 40 is a milestone and many people have goals that they want to reach by that age. Becoming debt free by 40 is a wonderful goal to have, and it can be achievable. By freeing yourself from financial hardships and overwhelming bills you can enjoy the next phase of your life. Follow the simple guidelines below to become debt free by 40.

You first need to get a clear picture of your finances. You cannot begin to eliminate debt without knowing exactly what you owe and to whom. Obtain a copy of your credit report and review. This will show you all of your outstanding debts. The total of these debts is the amount you need to pay off. You should write down how you plan to pay off these debts to make it a tangible goal. Make smaller goals leading up to the goal of becoming debt free by 40.

The next element of becoming debt free by 40 is to stop accumulating debt. This means you will have to stop spending more than your income every month. You may not even realize you are doing this. So, write down a budget. List all of your outgoing bills and your income. See what expenses can be eliminating. You can use that extra money to pay down your debt faster. Make your budget realistic so it is easy to stick to.

You can then implement the debt snowball method to begin eliminating your debts and become debt free by 40. With this method, you identify the debt that is the smallest. On this debt you will pay the minimum required payment plus an additional principal amount (an amount you can afford). In this fashion, you will reduce this debt until it is paid off. You will then move onto the next smallest debt and repeat the process. This will continue until all of your debts are eliminated!

To put your debt elimination plan into high gear, you must make more income. To earn more income you can take on a part time job, start a small business from home, sell or auction items you no longer use, or sell your services (such as babysitting or dog walking). Use any extra income you earn towards paying off your debts. This will speed up the debt snowball process and get you out of debt faster.

There is still time to become debt free by 40 by following the methods above. By sticking to your goals and focusing on the end prize of financial freedom, eliminating your debt will be easier than you think.
