How to Become a Dispensing Optician

The government economists in the bureau of labor statistics predict that the jobs for dispensing optician would grow by 2016. There is increase in demand for trendy frames for glasses in the market. People are looking at glasses as an object for enhancing their features and are no longer attracted to the contact lenses as substitute. Here is where the role of dispensing optician is important. His job is to make contacts and glasses for the clients as prescribed by the ophthalmologists and optometrists.

The skillful and proficient dispensing optician needs to play the role of crafts person as well as a salesperson. He needs to posses good communication skills and ability to understand his clients exact needs. His ability to get a sense of likes and dislikes of a person and his personality to suggest him the right size and style of the glassware to his client within their budget would be an extra advantage for his business.

The dispensing optician would have to interpret the prescription from the eye specialists accurately and prepare the exact eyewear at the ophthalmic lab. His skill lies in providing the clients with eyewear that matches the dimensions of their face. He might deal in fitting contact lenses, artificial eyes or even cosmetic shells that are used to cover the blind and disfigured eyes. His job could also include assisting the clients, repairing glasses or recommending the clients with extras such as contact lens tinting and antiglare coatings.

To take up a course to become dispensing optician the person needs to be good in mathematics and science. He should have good academic result in subjects like physics, biology, algebra and geometry. He should have good communication skills and preferably should have some knowledge of mechanical drawing.

Once they finish the course they can work with the manufactures of eyeglasses or lenses, at ophthalmic labs or they can open their own optical store. They have many options in career. A research conducted in U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the average per annum income for a dispensing optician as $35,060 in 2008. The high interest of clients in trendy frameworks is giving the opportunities for growth in income to the dispensing opticians.

Thus a dispensing optician is a person having skills of accurate interpretation of prescriptions that are provided by the ophthalmologists and optometrists. He is a person who has taken up a course to provide and manufacture exact eyewear that suits requirements of his client. For this job he needs to be proficient in handling various tools such as facial measuring equipments, salt or bend frames, hand tools like pliers, files, screwdrivers and lensometers. With all his salesmen and craftsmen skills he will become a successful dispensing optician.
