How to Become an Effective Communicator

Janet Hunt
In today's fast paced business world, business leaders must know how to effectively communicate with business associates, employees and executives. Listening can never be overrated and is essential in effective communication. Communication only occurs if the receiver understands your messages as you meant them. There are several important concepts to remember when learning to become a more effective communicator.

In the business world, you will encounter people at all levels and of both genders. These people will be from different cultures and backgrounds. Effectively communicating with all people is becoming increasingly important in today's global market place. Change always happens in business settings and communication is the key to change. Without effective communications your corporation will die.

Face-to-face conversations are the preferred method of business communication although this is not always possible. Why is this so? Ninety-three percent of what we understand come from something other than words. Adults learn by seeing, hearing and doing. Studies show a full 30 percent of all business emails are deleted without being read. Body language and tone helps us hear and understand the message more clearly. Sounds and symbols are translated into a mental picture in the hearer's mind which effectively communicates your message. In meeting with new clients, a face-to-face meeting is preferable if at all possible.

Effective body language is key in face-to-face meetings with clients. Your body language can cause the hearer to either receive or discard your message. If you are slumping in your body posture and looking off into space, you cannot expect the receiver to hear and understand your message. Do not use slang, acronyms or jargon. Speak clearly, simply and effectively.

What benefits do effective communications have for businesses and employees? An effectively communicated message helps you get to the point without the necessity of repeating yourself. Not having to repeat messages that were misunderstood saves both time and money and helps produce the desired results. Learning to communicate more effectively will reduce your stress and improve your confidence and self esteem.

Oops - "foil still covering". Typed that too fast.

I'm particularly sensitive to body language and other things - like the poor soul who got up to make a speech with foil still covered the buttons of her suit jacket. She'd forgotten to take the stuff off after having the jacket dry cleaned. At least, I think it was foil. Anyway, it was shiny and used to protect those buttons while they were being cleaned.
