English as a second language (ESL) has been growing significantly in many countries around the world. There is a great demand for teachers. You can embark yourself on a fulfilling cultural experience while earning a reasonably good salary. However, before you book a flight, you will surely want to have some insight. Here is a treasure of information to read in preparation of your adventure.

Qualifications

Teaching ESL demands more than just knowing how to speak English. Understanding the grammar and structure of the language is an important part of teaching, but the methods of teaching are also greatly important. Acquiring a TESOL, ESOL, TEFL or CELTA certificate, just to name a few, will give you the necessary tools to teach ESL successfully. Do not make it harder on yourself. Qualify first, and teaching English will be as easy as your ABC's. In addition, certification will result in finding the best teaching position.

Personality

There are many advantages for a teacher clothed with a desirable personality: finding, securing, enjoying a job and teaching successfully. The majority of schools are looking for the following traits: good communication skills, creativity, enthusiastic, listening skills, flexible, open-minded, patient, resourceful, humble, tactful, sense of humor, ability to deal with stress, knowledge of culture shock and cultural awareness. Knowing yourself is an added benefit before jumping in this adventure. Many are overly confident and end up going back home feeling dishearten.

Employment

The Internet offers many teaching positions but finding the right one can be a challenge. You can sign a contract over the Internet and everything is taking care of. You can hire an agent to do the work for you. Another option, which is a preferred one, is to visit the country first. Visiting the schools by yourself in the area will likely help you find a job suited just for you. Visiting first is very much to your advantage if your goal is to stay long-term in the country. If you cannot visit first, your visitor's visa should give you enough time to search out for a job. The Internet offers a wide variety of websites for those who want to familiarize themselves about schools. Many teachers post their experience online which can give you more insight. Before committing, do your homework well!

Culture

Learning about the country's culture equips you for better relationships with the people you will work with. It will also help you to cope with an expected culture shock. At work, expect and accept differences. You will have to learn to work around these differences if you want to thrive in your new environment. Keep in mind that you are there to fit in and not change their way of operating. It takes skills and a strong character to keep your senses in the process but it is achievable.

The recipe is simple! Qualifications combined with the right personality will make an outstanding ESL teacher. Do you fit the profile? Are you ready for the challenge? Prepare yourself for an enjoyable adventure and be ready to inspire your students!
