How to Become a Forgery Expert

Deborah Woehr
The first step to become a forgery expert is to conduct research on the different specialities that make up the industry. These specialties include forgery, investigating forgery, handwriting analysis, fraud investigation, forensic forgery analysis, and more.

Your local library is a good place to start in learning how to become a forgery expert. Check out the books that pertain to the specialty that you wish to learn and study. If you cannot find books in your local library, try other libraries in the general area where you live. The Internet is also a great place to find information.

Check out professional organizations to see what opportunities are available to you. You may be able to get an internship or an apprenticeship through these organizations. You should also attend seminars and conferences that will help you become a forgery expert. Subscribe to the journals and trade magazines in your specialty so that you can stay abreast of the latest techniques and technologies.

Once you learn enough to become proficient, write articles in professional journals, teach, or speak at conferences in order to become known in your field. The more people who know about your services, the greater chances you have to become a forgery expert.

Some specialties require schooling from a recognized institution. Document specialists may enroll in a certification program, where they must pass a written exam, submit case files from past cases, and pass an oral exam.

You can also specialize in multiple fields, such as fraud examination or forensics. Both require a bachelor's degree before you can earn further certification.
