How to Become a Graphic Designer: Different Degree Options

Graphic designers have their worked displayed on everything. Any kind of advertisement you see such as, billboards, magazine adds, banners, involves the work of a graphic designer. A lot of people who go into graphic design do so because they want to have a career involving advertisement. A degree from a four year college is not always required for a career in graphic design, but it will definitely put you ahead of the competition. The greatest thing about wanting to go into the field of graphic design is that you get to choose the path you take to get there.

Two Year Degree

There are many schools that offer training in the field of graphic design. There are many trade schools that teach those wanting to break into graphic designing. Many people find this to be very convenient and easier, considering that the degree only takes two years rather than the traditional four years at a university. Although this may be quicker, people with this type of degree usually start at a much lower level than those with a bachelor's degree.

Four Year Degree

There are many options for aspiring graphic designers when it comes to choosing a degree. Many people are under the misconception that they have to have a degree in graphic design specifically to be able to have a career in that field, but that is not the case. The important thing is to be sure that you artistic talent, as this job will be extremely difficult if you do not. Also, the major that you choose to get your degree in can differ, but everyone hoping to get a job as a graphic design will need to take some classes in typography, design, art history. Obviously, knowing your way around a computer is an absolute most for this career.

A degree in business with a focus on marketing can be great for someone who is hoping to become a graphic designer. Many people may be thinking that this has nothing to do with graphic design, but as long as you have all the necessary courses in art and are proficient in the required computer softwares, you should have no problem getting a graphic design job.

A degree in art also works for graphic designers. A degree in art will allow you to take all the necessary art classes and the classes to help you learn how to work with and manipulate the computer softwares most commonly used for graphic designing.

A communication degree with a focus on public relations or advertising can also help those hoping to begin a graphic design career. As mentioned before, as long as you have the basic elements of design covered along and can work with whatever computer programs your future jobs will require of you, you should be completely fine. A good thing about choosing one of these degrees is that you can also easily change your mind about your career.

Many schools also offer a degree in graphic design or communications design, which, obviously, allows you to get into that line of work very easily. Some schools also offer bachelor of fine arts degrees if you major in one of these, which can also put you ahead of the competition.
