How to Become or Improve as an Internet Writer

Dee Dee Smith
Many new to internet writing will assume it to be very similar to writing for a newspaper or magazine. Although this is somewhat true as it pertains to basic writing skills such as grammar and punctuation, the styles for internet writing and print are very different. As a result, even the most experienced newspaper or magazine writer will find it necessary to learn how to become a successful writer on the internet. Here are several concepts or areas of training that are important to the success of an internet writer.

Keywords and Search Engine Optimization

This was an area in which I struggled. I was used to simply writing quality work, and depending upon the publication that I wrote for to build my audience. This is not the way it works with internet writing. Instead, internet writers need to choose what are referred to as keywords to include in their titles and subtitles as well as the body. These are words or phrases that one might use in search engines to find websites or articles on particular topics. Although many internet writers may have a following so to speak, most visitors are sent to one's site from search engines. Most well paid internet writers have succeeded because of their knowledge of keywords and search engines.

Internet Writers Should Be Well Versed in Their Topic

A knowledge of one's topic is imperative as it pertains to the internet. Although one needs to be a good writer, it is just as important to convince the audience of one's knowledge of the subject at hand. Many chefs, gardeners, crafters, realtors, plumbers and various others have become highly accomplished internet writers. Simply put, they write about their passion. Becoming an expert and keeping up to date in one's area of writing expertise will greatly affect one's success as an internet writer.

Writers Should Brush Up On the Basics of Grammar and Punctuation

Continuing education and training is also vital to the success of an internet writer. Although formal education/college training is helpful, one can also sharpen their skills by taking a writing workshop or reading/reviewing grammar basics.

Create a Resume and Writing Portfolio

As with any job search, the first place to start is with creating a resume. Just as important is that of a few writing samples to show potential employers. Because employers on the internet have different writing styles, it is best to have a couple of samples written in third person, and at least one in first person (especially important for blogging opportunities).

There are various places on the internet to explore freelance writing and blogging opportunities. New writers should consider non-paid opportunities to help in building their portfolio.

Great advice. I hope to start my own ghostwriting company when I finally get around to getting my portfolio together. I know some professional people, one's a doctor, another owns the finance company that I borrow from. I am hoping they can help me get started. I've just not taken that leap of faith yet.
