How to Become More Efficient at Work

Evan Nash
Society has evolved over the years to become the fast-paced, multi-tasking world that it is now because of an emphasis on production. We all want to be able to produce and experience as much as possible in our lives and to do this we must do more than one thing at a time. While it is not entirely untrue that you need to move fast to get things done, you must be efficient more than anything else. Use the time you have the right way and you don't have to move quite so fast.

In a work environment the emphasis is even greater on mass productivity and you must be aware of what is required of you. There are some things that you can do to make yourself more efficient and accomplish more in the same amount of time.

1. Eliminate unproductive actions from your daily routine. This could be any number of things, but the important thing is if it doesn't help accomplish your goal, don't do it. Even beyond this idea is planning what you will do ahead of time to eliminate needless activities. If you have to walk across the building at work to go to the bathroom and the break room do both at the same time. If you have to use multiple computer systems to get information you need, cut wasted time out by getting everything you need from a system once, then moving on to other things.

2. Avoid gossiping in the work environment about co-workers and business related subjects. Aside from the fact that it can make you look untrustworthy and unprofessional, gossip wastes time. You should be aware of what is going on around you, but don't engage so much that your work suffers.

3. Don't waste time worrying about how you are possibly going to get all of the work done that is required of you. Just sit down and start working, don't even look at what you still have to do, just get to work and it will be done before you know it. A lot of time is wasted trying to figure out how you will have the time to get things done.

The most important thing to remember about being efficient is that you need to cut out what is not helping you finish your job. Worrying about time, worrying about what who is doing with who else and wasting time going from system to system will kill your efficiency. Realize what you do that is required of your job and focus on doing all of that repeatedly, just forget about the rest.
