Before you even begin to think about accomplishing this giant mountain you need to take lots of baby steps. This means that if you have non experience rock climbing you will want to sign up for some classes and practice as much as you can. If you work full time, make every weekend a climbing excursion. You should also take a class in aid climbing which will familiarize you with the use of artificial climbing techniques and pegs.
A course in ice climbing is recommended after a few months of regular rock climbing. This is not something you should attempt on your own without proper instruction. Ice climbing is a different world entirely and you will need to learn new techniques. Once you feel comfortable on the ice start planning expeditions to smaller mountain ranges such as Cho Oyu located in Nepal. You are now well on your way to Mt. Everest.
Another hurdle you will have to overcome on your journey to Mt Everest is funding the expedition. The permit alone will cost you $10,000 and the total trip will be approximately $25,000. Luckily, there are several ways you can raise these funds without having to sell all of your personal possessions.
Sponsorship is one solution. This will more likely work for you if you are in some way a first. If you can separate yourself from some way from everyone else who has already climbed Mt. Everest then most likely you will be able to find a company to cover the costs of your trip.
Another great way to cover the costs of your trip is to allow a broadcast network to follow and film you on your climb of Mt. Everest. If you are an artistic individual you can also sell photographs you took of Mt. Everest.
To get started in your fundraisers simply pick up the phone and call everyone you can think of. Networking is the key when trying to raise money. Also send email or phone queries to companies that you feel may be interested in sponsoring a climber of Mt. Everest.
One of the most important steps in preparing for a trip to Mt. Everest is ensuring that you are healthy and physically fit. Have your cholesterol checked at least three months in advance. Clogged arteries can actually cause frostbite while climbing Mt. Everest. It is also a good idea to stop smoking and drinking alcohol as it will tighten the arteries. Begin a workout plan and get in shape well in advance of this excruciating climb to the top. You should also have an overall exam done to assess you heart, brain, and lungs.
While it may quite literally take years to achieve your goal, when you are standing at the summit of Mt. Everest it will all be worth it.
