Do you have an interest in the fine arts, or would you like to become a museum curator? Let us first define what a museum curator does. A museum curator selects and attains pieces of art for museums. It also includes a knack for displaying objects in a way to grasp the attention of others. There are many more tasks the museum curator is responsible for that require close attention to detail and most important of all the presentation and security of the collection. Collections can range from paintings and sculptures to furniture and historical art. Also, there are lines of natural history and science museums, which focus more on natural artifacts, such as fossils, evolution and other historical scientific information.

One way to become a museum curator is if one is fortunate enough to have a member of the family that is into collecting items of significance, and they are highly educated in this area of interest. Someone who is aiming at becoming a museum curator can become knowledgeable of artifacts, and the actual pieces themselves can be shared through the generations of a family. This is generational knowledge passed down, possibly through centuries. If this is something your family has an interest in then this maybe one of the few ways to becoming a museum curator.

Another option of course is to attend a college, which is highly recognized for educational courses directly related to material such as art, art history, and natural history. Usually a Masters or Doctorate degree is required depending on the museum and the pieces usually presented. The information learned must be accurate for a museum curator, and one must use the education in their career development. Accuracy is most important in this position. There will be many questions asked during each exhibition from people that are highly educated on the pieces to others who aren't as familiar. The information must be able to be properly relayed and understood by each visitor, including the owners of the museums who are entrusted with these artifacts. A student may work as an intern. Check with the local museums in the area and see if they have this option open.

The career course of the museum curator can range from internship as a museum curator to possibly the director of the museum itself. There is a lot of competition in the career of a museum curator. Knowledge and attention to detail is key in this line of work. For more information on becoming more familiar with pursuing a position as a museum curator contact the American Association of Museums. They will offer more information on educational requirements and career potential.
