How to Become a Perfusionist

Perfusionists are one of the most important members of a surgery team. Their job is to provide patients with extracoperal circulation so that the surgeon will be able to operate a heart that is still. To become a perfusionist, you will have to undergo a lot of training and certificate programs. The training and certificate program is designed so that you will be competent in this field. One of the traits required to become a perfusionist is that you have to be ready to work under pressure, be able to focus and concentrate on complex task for a long period of time. You will also need to pay close attention to details and must be ready to communicate rapidly and effectively.

There are certain steps you have to take to become a full fledged perfusionist. A four year college is required which allow you to earn a bachelors degree in nursing, medical technology, biological sciences or respiratory therapy. After college, you will have to enroll in a two year training program called the Cardiac Perfusion Program. You will gain classroom experience, training in the clinic and real time experience in an operating room fully supervised by perdusionists. After your program, you will be qualified to practice as a full time perfusionist.

Before taking on the career as a perfusionist, you will have to find out the schools that offer accredited perfusionist programs. Not all schools are accredited. Perfusionist programs cost a lot of money. It will be a shame to spend your money on a school that is not accredited. The American Academy of Cardiovascular Perfusion has a list of programs that is offered by different schools which are recognized by them. This is important because for you to be certified to practice, you are required to graduate from an accredited school.

After graduating the program,you will have to appear for an exam in order to become a certified perfusionist (CCP) . Before you take the exam, you will be giving a board-eligible status certificate. It will not show that you have not taking the exam. This allow you to start working immediately. It will allow you to gather valuable experience before taking the certificate exam to become a perfusionist.

Once you become a certified perfusionist and completing your certification completely, you will be able to operate heart-lung machine used in pulmonary bypass surgeries for a variety of procedures related to heart. This includes valve repairs and organ donations. In the surgery room, the authorized perfusionist will be the person responsible for keeping the condition of the patient stable.
