How to Become a Record Breaking Discus Thrower

Want to be a track star? It's not hard if you can throw. Being a record-breaking discus thrower is fun and easy. How do I know? Well, I ran track for about three and a half years, and for four years I threw the discus. I started out throwing only 58 feet my freshman year. And by senior year, I broke the school record, and threw 105 beautiful feet. It was awesome. You can be a track star too by throwing the discus well and breaking records. Track doesn't have to be just for runners. It's for everyone. Below, you will find all you need to know to be a record-breaking discus thrower.

The shoes

These are the most important part of becoming a record-breaking discus thrower. You should get spinning shoes. They can be found at athletic stores. Don't for one moment think that you can take a short cut on the discus spinning shoes. They are pricey and will cost you about $60, but they are worth it. How do I know? Well, for four years, I threw the discus in my regular sneakers and it wasn't until the fourth year when the new coach let me borrow her shoes, that I broke the school record.

The stance

When you get into the circle, turn your back to the throwing field. Then, bend your knees deep, but don't let your knees go over your toes. You should kind of look like you are sitting in an invisible chair. Your throwing arm should have the discus in it. And that arm should be bent with the discus held on you finger tips as if you were about to throw a Frisbee. The arm should be bent in such a way that the top of the discus is parallel with your chin, but the discus is held chest level. In other words, your arm should be bent inward towards you body. Take your other arm and hold it straight out. It will guide you as you spin around in the circle. Knees bent and arms in the above position, get ready to spin.

The spin

Take your foot that's on the same side as your throwing arm and bring it around to the middle of the circle. Take the other foot and bring it around behind that foot. Then, using your knees pop up and throw that discus as hard as you can. But remember, the power comes from the knees.

The grunt

Each time you throw let out a grunt. I know it sounds silly, but believe me it works. When you grunt, subconsciously, you will give the throw all you have to give it. So let it all hang out. Just before you are about to let your knees pop up, get ready to let out a huge, "Ugh!" And there you have it, you are on your way to becoming a record-breaking discus thrower.
