So, how did Day 1 go? Did you get all your running gear to help you sweat in style? I hope so because today we get down to business.
30 - 30 Run/Walk
When I first starting running, I experienced the worse shin splints that I thought were imaginable. I couldn't fathom running farther than a few feet much less an entire mile. What helped me was giving myself time to cheat. I started by run-walking.
Jeff Galloway, a former Olympic runner and the author of Galloway's Book on Running, guided me during the first part of my running venture. Not personally, of course. I have never met the man. But I had stumbled upon his run-walk series when I visited the Motion Traxx website that had been suggested by Fitness Magazine. Motion Traxx provides both free and fee-based Podcasts for various types of exercising. This is where I found Jeff Galloway's 30-30 run/walk guide.
Let's Try It
Today I want you to get that play list, a stopwatch (or stopwatch app on your mobile device) and move for 15 minutes alternating 30 seconds running/30 seconds walking. I don't want you to worry about your form. Remember when I introduced myself on Day 1? I said that we were going to do this without having to be perfect. So, run what feels natural to you. No comparing or being critical of yourself.
During your 30 seconds running you can jog, sprint or find middle-ground. Do what you feel your body can handle. Try to breathe evenly. But if you are huffing and puffing just slow down a little. Learning to breathe as you run will take some time. Adopt this running mantra - I can do this. Imagine you are the Little Engine That Could. This analogy will come in handy days down the road.
When you take your walk breaks enjoy them. Breathe in the fresh air. Let your body relax and get ready for the next 30 seconds.
15 minutes is not long. You can do anything for 15 minutes. Once your 15 minutes is over get dehydrated, eat a banana. Did you know bananas are full of potassium and maintaining proper levels of potassium is essential to overall health?
Next, mark off Day 2 on your calendar. You did it! You are one step closer to earning that runner's title. Day 3 will bring some changes. So, I will see you tomorrow. Rest up and good work!
