How to Become Self Educated: Overcoming the 3 Most Common Myths
It's Never Too Late to Learn New Things!
A good place to begin is to examine the 3 most common myths associated with self education so you can learn how to overcome them.
Myth #1 Environment Makes Self Education Impossible
This myth about becoming self educated grows from the stereotypes of big city poverty and racial barriers.
It is too easy to assume that self education is impossible when no one around you appears to have any education at all and the crime rates are high.
In contrast to this myth, you can become self educated by acting on the intelligence you know you possess. This intelligence isn't diminished by poverty or racial barriers. You just have to be dedicated to your course of study.
Further, just because there are not good schools in your area doesn't mean that you can't get a library card.
Myth #2 Self Education is Only a Hobby
The myth that self education is only about casual reading and is therefore not valuable comes from society's pressure to accomplish things according to measurable and tangible standards.
"What good is reading if you don't get a diploma?"
You should realize that people are always being self educated. If you wonder why your dog likes a certain kind of food, for example, you are likely to look at the label in the interest of becoming self educated.
You can become self educated by looking at everyday chances to learn new things. Find out what you are interested in and organize your self education around that.
Self education is more than a hobby because learning of any kind has a value to it. Self education lets you understand the world you live in better.
Myth #3 Self Education Doesn't Lead to a Career
This myth which surrounds self education comes from society's tendency to associate formal education with the economy.
"The people with the most college degrees are also the most rich."
A simple way to denounce this myth and become self educated is to visit sites like Careers.com. There you will find good jobs that you can learn on your own.
Industries often hire computer/information technologists to debug their computer systems, for example, and these are people who are largely self educated.
In conclusion, there are 3 common myths that are linked with becoming self educated.
But you can overcome these myths by knowing you are intelligent, that you have ambition, and that your self education will lead to lasting rewards.

Post a CommentI never really gave this much thought, but you are so right! Thanks for the lesson.
You are absolutely right. There are many advantages to self education.
As someone who homeschooled her three brilliant sons, I am a great believer in self education! Reading and thinking are key.
Excellent thoughts, Dan!
Excellent information in this article. One means for self-education: create a strong, structured reading program, and read continuously. Thanks!
I really liked this, Dan. :-) Very good.
Uplifting, positive article...the meaning of which is lost on those who so broadly stroke all diplomas as left bent, and all teachers as extremists and socialists.
:-)
I agree with Patti...that's why I love your stuff....I learn from you all the time!
The diploma is only the sign that your brain got bent left while being educated by academic extremists and socialists. Some of our greatest entrepreneurs, inventors, and learned men and women were not educated in college.
