Spinning, for those that don't know, is a very intensive exercise that is practiced on a stationary bike equipped with a resistance control dial. The scale of measuring exercise is that of "perceived exertion" so that the exercise is adaptable to everyone. Heart rate is also key to the exercise and is often monitored in class.

Most people who have taken a spinning class realize that the instructor is one of the most important keys a successful workout (after personal motivation, or course). Spinning classes can be boring and lacking exhilaration without the right instructor. So if you have attended too many of these characteristically lackluster spinning classes, you may want to consider becoming a spinning instructor yourself.

Becoming a spinning instructor is not difficult, but it does require a certain amount of legwork. All spinning instructors must have a spinning certification in order to teach a class.

Spinning Orientation
First those that want to become spinning instructors must sign up for a one day orientation class at spinning.com. The website will then locate the next available spinning orientation day in your area. There will probably be many different orientations in your area, so you will choose which is most convenient and register for it. The fee as of 5/01/2009 for the orientation is $295.00. The spinning instructor manual, which costs $30, is also required.

During the spinning orientation you will practice with different spinning experts and learn their tricks. They will assist you to built a ride profile for your own classes, as well as teach you how to lead a class of students.

Assessment
After the spinning orientation, you will need to take an online Assessment at spinning.com to obtain your certification. The orientation will have taught you everything you need to know to pass the Assessment and become a certified Spinning Instructor!

Expiration
The spinning certification expires 2 years from the date of the Orientation. In order to keep a certification active, spinning instructors need to take continuing education. Continuing education can come in the form of online classes, workshops, quizzes, as well as classes offered in exercise science and heart rate training. Most spinning instructors that are interested in improving their teaching abilities will have no trouble meeting the continuing education requirements, and will find that the courses are very helpful.

Certification Levels
There are 3 different spinning certification levels; each new instructor starts at level 1 and can move to level 3 after gaining experience and continuing education credits. As instructors complete the necessary number of credits, they can choose to take an exam to qualify for level 2 or level 3 certification status.

Spinning Equipment
There are many different spinning products out there, but the most basic and essential spinning product is a pair of spinning shoes. Spinning shoes hook onto the spinning bike petals and allow for optimal exercise and fluidity of movement. Spinning shoes can be purchased online from around $50-$150. Instructors should expect to purchase a pair of spinning shoes, if they haven't already, before orientation. Other optional equipment accessories are heart rate monitors and padded pants.
