How to Become a Tattoo Artist in Illinois

To become a licensed tattoo artist in the state of Illinois, you do not need any formal education or training. To become licensed you need to simply take the licensing exam through the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. However, spending several months in an apprenticeship for an already licensed tattoo artist will greatly help your chances of passing the exam. Illinois tattoo artist licenses are issued annually and must be renewed each year for a nominal fee. As of 2011, the renewal fee was $20.

Step 1

Contact an Illinois licensed tattoo artist, inquiring about an apprenticeship. While Illinois does not require tattoo artist to attend a school to learn their trade, if you want to become a successful tattoo artist, an apprenticeship is a must. During the apprenticeship, you will learn the proper way to tattoo, different techniques, tattooing laws, tips on running a business and health regulations. There is no specific time requirement for apprenticeship in Illinois; however, the tattoo artist you are training under should tell you when he feels you are competent to take the exam.

Step 2

Contact the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation via its website to test for a tattoo art license. As of 2011, the exam fee was $200. During the exam, you will be tested on tattoo parlor and equipment sanitation laws, safety and hygiene laws. If you pass the exam, you will be awarded your license, which is good from the date issued to December 31st of the next even numbered year. For example, if you received your license in September 2011. It would be good until December 31, 2012.

Step 3
