One way to easily begin to work as a tile setter is a position that offers on the job training. Most employers may start an employee off as an apprentice or shadow another tile setter, and then once the skills are learned they can begin to work with less direction and more confidence. Check into your local companies, sometimes making a personal appearance shows more interest and determination.

If an apprenticeship opportunity is not available with a company, then consider checking into vocational education schools in your area. They teach trades and offer more technical training, which is recognized by employers. If you are fresh out of high school, check with a guidance counselor. They may be able to direct your path to local vocational schools that can train you to become a tile setter.

There also may be volunteer positions that could be of help in teaching some of the more simple and basic techniques of tile setting. Local communities in your area may need volunteers to help rebuild local damaged homes or buildings, even shelters for the community.

Another way to get more involved is to join a union or become a member of a tile setters association. There is the union of International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. The other alternative is paying membership to The Nation Tile Contractors Association.

Maybe you want to complete a project at home. There are books in hardware stores and libraries that give you a complete step-by-step guide on how to tile set. Find out what avenue to pursue and go for it. It is never as hard as it seems. Just getting started is the hardest.
