How to Become a Vegetarian When You Are Still in High School

When teens enter high school they are faced with health issues that they didn't have as young children. Weight gain is a concern that many teens have in high school as their metabolism is changing from that of a child to that of an adult. If you are a high school student that is struggling with weight issues then forego starvation diets and instead focus on a diet that will be sustainable, that is healthy and that will provide your body with the nutrition it needs to function. One of the best diets for all of these things is a vegetarian diet.

Tip #1 - Know What You Need

When you cut anything out of your diet, like meat, you need to make sure you are still getting the nutrients that the eliminated food item offered. When you are transitioning from a meat diet to a vegetarian diet you need to make sure you are getting enough iron and protein. Fortunately, there are many vegetarian foods that are rich in both of these things. Vegetarian protein, for example, can be found in nuts, beans and tofu.

Tip #2 - Identify the Fattening Foods

Believe it or not you can gain weight on a vegetarian diet if you select the wrong foods. You want to avoid fried vegetarian foods and vegetarian foods that are high in fats. Eating too many starches can also inhibit your attempt to lose weight or to get healthy.

Tip #3 - Transition Slowly to Vegetarian Diet

It is difficult on your body to make radical changes in your diet. In order to make things easier on both your will power and your body try transitioning from your current diet to a vegetarian diet one ingredient at a time. For example, you can start by eliminating red meat from your diet, then poultry and finally fish and other meat products. This gradual transition will give you the time needed to find tasty alternatives to your favorite meat products.

Tip #4 - Learn About Your Options

There is more than one type of vegetarian. The basic vegetarian doesn't eat meat, but they will eat eggs and dairy products. Then there are vegans. Vegans don't eat any product that comes from an animal, this includes eggs and dairy products. If you want to be super strict you can also be a raw food vegan, which means that you don't eat animal products and you don't eat foods that are processed or cooked above a certain temperature.

Tip #5 - Work With an Adult

Since you are still young and learning about what your body needs to be healthy it is a good idea to work with an adult when transitioning to a vegetarian diet when you are still in high school. A nutritionist is a good option, as is your primary care physician. If you don't have access to either of these professionals then work with your parents who may be able to help you find resources that will enhance your new vegetarian lifestyle. Who knows you may be able to inspire your entire family to become vegetarians.
