How to Become a Victim in Two Seconds!

Connie S Owens
Do Not Think about what you are doing! That is it, nothing more or less will do as well. Pretty simple, and yet complicated, what does it mean really? It means that on a daily basis, at any given time we, the collective we, are bombarded by advertising messages from television to print, phone calls from telemarketers and companies seeking to build their customer base. Societies of consumerism, sell, sell and sell. Consume, then consume some more, beyond your financial status, over spend, over consume, over do it. Going into debt, living on adrenaline created by this act alone is an addiction, before you realize it you are seeking out another avenue to develop stress just so you can feel normal. Not much different from the junky or drunk on the street when you get right down to it.

Millions of articles, books, and videos are developed daily telling us that we can change our way of thinking, living and doing. Yet they are just as guilty of the onslaught of marketing tactics to sell their products and earn a huge living. People writing an e-book telling someone else how to get rich and that person is completely broke, or at least near it. Read between the lines, decipher the messages and discover the truth. Every one of them has a secret to getting rich, making millions and finding the gold at the end of the rainbow. The strange part is that we can and will, as consumers, spend our little bit of money on these secrets. Perhaps we will watch, read and listen, then what? They go back on a shelf to collect dust. From where I sit right now I can view an entire book shelf devoted to self-help, topics include dog training, how to change the way you think, network marketing techniques and a few others. They come in handy when I need a door prop, otherwise they get dusted and returned to the shelf. They are there to remind me of my potential, how to become a victim in one simple easy step.

Recently I purchased a book on how to cure debt, spent more for it than it was worth and to top it off discovered the information is old news. The other victim event in my life is the purchase of a magazine subscription through a service, they charge you monthly to use their service, and when I finally did the math, OMG! I received a promotional ad in the mail to subscribe to one of the magazines; the cost is $18.00 for one year, 12 issues. The other one I took a look at the site, $8.00 for one year, again 12 issues. The reader service, $20 per month for 38 months, equaling $760.00 for a five year subscription. Get it? Got it? Good! Thank goodness for the promo ad, for once junk mail paid off huge. Not paying attention on that first phone call, the fast talk and tricky little phrases does not give one a chance to think; before you know it you have said yes and are in debt. I called the number back to verify what the plan was, said I wanted to cancel; the supervisor kept wanting to argue with me about what I did. She wanted to explain there are still remaining payments, and this was a service company and this is who I am paying. Six, maybe seven times I said "cancel my subscription through you"; no magazine is worth $700. That $20 per month in a savings account and in 38 months that is savings with interest.

Look out, take the time to think, do the math, research, teach yourself not to get caught up in the winning a prize of millions of dollars, do not be greedy, and learn to say no. You are paying a high price for a chance to win, money that if you would put it away will accumulate, eventually paying off in greater dividends. For instance I keep putting that $20 p/month away, eventually it is enough to purchase a share or invest in something that will get me a return. There are investment plans, stock options, a dozen other ways to spend that money that will give a greater return than something will eventually end up in a land fill, unless perchance the recycle bin is handy. I reiterate, the choice is yours, just like it is mine, chase the million with odds against or do the math. Are you willing to be a victim?
