How to Become a VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

Patti Winters
Virtualization allows multiple operating systems and multiple applications to run on one computer at the same time. Through utilizing virtual servers and virtual desktops administration can be performed remotely, adding additional flexibility. As this technology gains popularity, certification to verify knowledge and experience in the field also gains status. VMware is the leading software provider for virtual computing software. Currently they offer two certifications VMware Certified Professional (VCP) Program and the advanced certification VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX).

VMware states, "Gain the in-depth skills and industry-recognized certification on VMware technology today! The VMware Certified Professional Program is designed for any technical individual -- partners, end-users, resellers, and consultants - who wants to demonstrate his or her expertise in virtual infrastructure and increase his or her potential for career advancement. We offer certification on the current version of our software: VMware Infrastructure 3.5/VMware VirtualCenter 2.5. Note that VMware Infrastructure 3.5/VMware VirtualCenter 2.5 questions were added to the exam beginning in March of 2008. Those who tested on VMware Infrastructure 3.0 and VC 2.0 version of the exam do NOT have to retest."

TAKE AN AUTHORIZED TRAINING COURSE:

Participate in a VMware authorized course that is instructor-led to learn best practices and gain hands-on experience. The accepted courses are: "Install and Configure" (This hands-on training course explores installation, configuration, and management of VMware Infrastructure 3, which consists of VMware ESX Server and VMware VirtualCenter. Upon completion of this course, you can take the examination to become a VMware Certified Professional. The course has been updated to reflect ESX Server 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5. Students who complete this course should enroll next in VMware Infrastructure 3: Deploy, Secure, and Analyze); "Deploy, Secure and Analyze" (This hands-on training course, aimed at experienced VMware Infrastructure administrators, has been updated to reflect ESX Server 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5. It focuses on ESX Server 3.5 rather than ESX Server 3i. On completion of this course, you can take the examination to become a VMware Certified Professional. This course is a continuation of the VMware Infrastructure 3: Install and Configure course); and "Fast Track" (This intensive, extended-hours training course covers the installation, management, and use of VMware ESX Server, VMware VirtualCenter, VMware DRS, VMware HA, VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB), VMware Converter, Storage VMotion, and VMware Update Manager. It combines the content from the 3.5 versions of the VMware Infrastructure 3: Install & Configure and Deploy, Secure, and Analyze training courses. Upon completion of this course, you can take the examination to qualify as a VMware Certified Professional). If you are a current VCP, there are no course prerequisites.
