How to Become a Writer

Writing--it is a dream life for some of us. We read books, magazines, webpages and think "wow, I would LOVE to do that!"

Well, you can.

There are four steps that all must follow in order to become a writer. Some of us like to make it seem as if we are doing something really special but in fact the steps are so easy anyone can do them!

Step One: Write
Start by putting your fingers to the keyboard, or that pencil to paper. When you read a book, write a review of what you have read. When you try a new product do the same.

If a poem comes to mind release it and move on.

When you learn how to do something, share it with others using the written word.

The essential key to becoming a writer is to write. What you write isn't as important as the fact that you are putting words on the screen. Regardless of the subject matter, someone will be interested in reading what you have to say so start putting it down in preparation.

Step Two: Proofread
If you want people to read your work you have to make it readable. Misspelled words, poor grammar and excessive profanity will all contribute to alienating your audience so proofread everything that you create.

If you are worried, use the spell check on your word processing program, ask for a friend to read it for you and verify the spelling of words using a dictionary. The Elements of Style by William Strunk may help your writing and proofreading skills.

Step Three: Publish
No one will be able to read your work if you keep it hidden under your bed. Sign up on a website that accepts new contributors, like the Yahoo! Contributor Network. Another popular website for new writers is Helium. Open an account with one of these sites and start publishing your creations so that you can start earning an income from your work.

Step Four: Repeat
Like the one-hit wonders that dot the music industry, the one-piece writer isn't really a writer at all. If you really want to be a writer you need to continuously create content and release it to the world in order to free yourself to create even more.

Becoming a writer, like any worthwhile endeavor, takes time, effort and devotion. During your journey you will likely meet several who scoff at your goal--just ignore those naysayers and move on, or better yet post a rant on your blog to vent what you are feeling within. You may not become rich instantly, but who knows--you could become another J.K. Rowling! You will never know what you are capable of until you try!
