How to Make Your Bed Mattress Comfortable

Kassidy Emmerson
Obviously, if your bed mattress isn't comfortable, you're not going to get a good night's sleep. Since you spend about a third of your life in bed, that means you're going to end up being sleep deprived, being stressed, experience body pain- and maybe even become ill. Even if you spend a lot of time shopping for the most comfortable bed mattress you can find, it can end up feeling too hard or too soft after you've actually slept on it for awhile. Not only that, but as we age and our bodies change, that once-comfortable bed mattress can suddenly not accommodate us. Read this informative article and find out how to make your bed mattress comfortable.

Start Out With A Good Bed Mattress and Box Springs
If your mattress is shot, there's nothing you can do to make it deliver physical ease. According to spineuniverse.com, most people don't buy new mattresses when they should. A mattress that's more than 10 ten years old probably needs replaced. Holes and worn spots, a permanent sag in the middle, swaying, and feeling the coils when you lie down are definite signs your mattress is kaput.

1. Clean Your Bed Mattress
The first step to make your mattress comfortable, according to overstock.com, is to clean it if it's soiled. You can vacuum it, take it outside and beat the dust and dirt out of it, or use a steam cleaner on it.

2. If Your Bed Mattress Is Too Soft...
You can make it firmer by placing a sheet of half-inch-thick plywood in between the mattress and the box springs. The wood will add support to your bed mattress, and your body as well.

3. If Your Bed Mattress Is Too Soft OR Firm...
You can adjust the softness or hardness with mattress toppers. You can choose from different thicknesses of memory foam pads, egg carton foam pads, feather-filled mattress toppers, and numerous mattress pads. Mattress toppers can make your bed mattress comfortable. They also help protect your mattress from wear.

According to goodhousekeeping.com, you should choose a mattress pad that's made of foam or latex for added support. "Memory (viscoelastic) foam has more "give," while latex offers firmer support."

4. Arthritis? Try a Wool Mattress Pad
Another way to make your bed mattress comfortable, especially if you suffer from painful arthritis, is to choose wool. According to themattresslady.com, a wool mattress pad will "cradle your body" and "help distribute your weight" so pressure points are reduced. It will keep you warm and cool all year 'round.

The lanolin in a natural wool mattress pad will help relieve aching muscles and joints, and help stimulate your blood circulation too, according to mattressinside.com.

5. Use Sheets That Fit Your Mattress Snugly
Bed sheets that fit loosely create wrinkles underneath your body. You can also feel the sheets move every time you move, especially when you turn over. Use the right-size sheets to avoid these problems. If you want to make sure your bed sheets stay in place so your mattress is comfortable, you can use elastic sheet straps.

I have brought my second mattress in the last 7 years. I have fibromiallga and it would be wonderful to get a restfull nite sleep. However, I haven't been able to get it because of the typy of mattress. The first was a pillow top it sagged in the middle which the company exchanged for another w/o a pillow top, this mattress also did the same thing. Please, I need help my body can't take anymore, neither can my pocket.
