Job Description

Duties include instructing individuals or groups on exercise and weight training. Also, it is the trainer's responsibility to teach proper breathing as well as demonstrating how to properly use gym equipment. Trainers should monitor individuals as they work out and help them adapt to programs. In addition, fitness trainers should design a routine that fits the individual so they know exactly what needs to be done to reach their goal weight.

Education and Requirements

The requirement a fitness trainer needs solely depends on the type of training they wish to teach. Some employers provide on-the-job training; however, employers are beginning to search for applicants that have a bachelor's degree in the field of health or fitness. Most employers require applicants to obtain a high school diploma or GED, as well as be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Income Potential

The average income for a fitness trainer as of February 2010 is $38,000 per year. However, if you decide to become a personal trainer, your income could reach as high as $68,000 per year. In addition, aerobics instructors average the same amount of income as a fitness trainer.

Advantages and Disadvantages

A great advantage to becoming a fitness trainer is you are helping individuals turn their lives around and learn how to live a healthy life. Another great advantage is flexible hours and good pay.

Just like any other type of career, there are disadvantages as well; issues such as building a client base, it can be difficult to find enough clients to allow you to work 40 hours a wee. Also, paying rent for a building if you are running your own business and floor hours.

Before deciding to begin a career as a fitness trainer, do your research and learn all you can about the profession. Also, check with your local gyms and find out what type of requirements are needed to become a trainer.
