• Take inventory of yourself and your equipment. Taking an inventory of yourself should consist of the following questions:
Are you ready to turn your hobby into a full time business?
Is there a market in your area for a sewing business?
How much funding do you need to start your sewing business?
What are the zoning requirements in your neighborhood, or do you need to lease another spare in another location?
How do you price your work?
The inventory of your equipment will consist of making sure you have the basics to work with to complete a project. These basic items are sewing machine, iron, and some basic notions on hand.
• Make a business plan with set goals you want to achieve. Make sure the goals are obtainable so you don't get discouraged in the early months of your new sewing business. For advice on writing a business plan take some time to go to a book store in your area.
• Market yourself and your business everywhere you go. Get involved in a networking group, such as a local chapter of National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). Go to some different local events with your business card to hand out as you talk to people. A key thing to remember is that you are in the garment industry, so dressing the part is very important. The way you dress is a wonderful advertisement of your work, and should convey attention to details.
• Time management is another important part of your success in your business. A good book to read for help with setting up a daily schedule is 'Time Management' by Julie Morgenstern. Learning to manage your time as you begin your business will establish a good work schedule as you get busier guiding you to finish tasks on time. Finishing tasks on time will make happy customers and happy customers will refer other customers to your business.
• Set up your business bookkeeping from the beginning. If you have an accountant ask for help getting organized with all the paperwork and software needed to make your business a complete success.
