How to Get the Best Air Fare Online

Laura Byrnes
When looking for air fare tickets, there's one thing to remember: Be patient! If you wait until the last minute to find your flight, you're most likely going to be paying triple the average price. Flights fluctuate in price alot, so if you start looking early, and check fares every few days or so, you'll be almost guaranteed to find what you're looking for.

To start off, never stick to one site. Use your favorite search engine to search for "air fare" and stick every reliable site you can find on your favorites list. It may seem better to stick to some of the more well-known cheap sites, like Expedia or Travelocity, but quite often you can find deals from other places to, even the airlines themselves!

Next, find yourself a good air fare search engine. There are quite a few of these, such as Kayak.com, that let you put in your destination and desired dates, and will search every website they can for best price imaginable. On top of that, air fair search engines will often have an option to receive a daily or weekly e-mail with the top cheapest fares for your desired flights.

Be flexible! This isn't always an option, but if you can, be open with your dates and times. Flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday is often much cheaper than flying on a Thursday or Friday. Late afternoon or evening flights are often undesireable, and even as such, usually go for much cheaper. Other options also include flights with a few stopovers or those with longer than average flight times. Most sites will have an option for flexibility, and will show you a calendar, or something similar, where you can compare prices for different days and times.

Lastly, be aware of where you're flying into. Are you arriving at a major airport in a big city? Chances are the prices will be through the roof. So why not fly into somewhere else? If you can find an airport 10-20 minutes away that's much smaller, you'll have to pay more for cab fare, but not nearly as much as you would have to pay otherwise! Many air fare sites will have an option to check local airports within a certain radius of your original choice. If not, you can use sites like World-airport-codes.com to search for airports all around the world, and even the distance between them!

Surely you've got your work cut out for you, but it'll be worth it when you look in your wallet! I, myself, saved $200 using a combination of these tips on my summer vacation, and so can you. Good luck!
