How to Get the Best Parking Spot in the Parking Garage

Bill Hanks
We have all looked for that good parking place for one reason or another. Many individuals, with and without handicaps, always get the prime parking spots. However, how does one get the next best place? Some individuals have prime parking spots written into their contracts. Some businesses will pay extra to keep certain spots reserved for their business. If a business owns the garage, they are always going to get the best accessible spots. Some garages work on a first come first served basis. Others may charge extra for a better spot.

If you are a one time visitor, just ask the garage attendant for the best possible space. Explain your situation. In some cases, they might allow you to park closer to your destination. If you are a regular customer, try to establish a communication relationship with the attendant.

A simple smile and hello will get you started. Keep your conversation brief. Treat the individual with respect. After they get to know you, after a few visits, ask them how you would go about getting a better place to park. Always have a legitimate reason, why you need a closer location.

Another way is to tip without a commitment. When you pay your parking fee, pay a small tip. Workers tend to remember where their tips come from. However, if you give a tip, don't expect anything in return. Some individuals will ask up front what it will cost to get a better spot. This s called bribery. Sometimes it does work.

I once had an uncle that got the best parking spot at every St. Louis Cardinals baseball game. His bribe was a bag of deer sausage. He even got his parking spot for free.

If you need a spot for a ball game, find out who uses the spot you want and see if you can borrow their sticker or spot. You might offer a couple of bucks for the use of the spot when it is open.

Another tip is to arrive early before the good spots are gone. As long as your spot isn't reserved, you can park there first.

Always try to park in the same spot. Others, that see your vehicle on a daily basis, will assume that it is your permanent spot. This also means using the same vehicle day after day.

Finally, it is important to be thankful to your attendant or to whomever helped you with your spot. You may need it again. There are no tricks to getting a good parking spot. It usually just comes down to communication, being early, and a friendly tip of gratuity.
