1. Book ahead and constantly confirm
If you make your reservation well in advance, always ensure to call and confirm once or twice before you actually arrive. This lets the hotel know that you are definitely going to be checking in. Also ask them to put you in the best room in the hotel; they might retort by saying we don't actually assign the room till you arrive. Nevertheless, ask them politely if they don't mind putting in a request in the comments section of the reservation.
2. Arrive early
If at all possible, arrive ahead of check in time. Usually check in time for most hotels is 3pm, arriving maybe an hour or two earlier will be helpful because you get the pick of the rooms that have been cleaned first. The added bonus to this is that if the room you get is not up to your satisfaction, you can request to be moved or have it cleaned once more. Again, if you are moved, you get to pick. Now don't go and ask to be moved just to be spiteful or just because you didn't like the color of the drapes.
3. Be nice to the front desk staff
Being nice and cheerful with the front desk staff always has its perks. Even though you have had a hard day at work or a long trip, remember the front desk staff deals with people like you on a daily basis. Imagine how they must feel! If you are a frequent traveler to that hotel, remember the front desk people by their names, and compliment them every now and then. Trust me; the front desk clerk will go out of their way to ensure you have a really nice room. Another way to ensure that you have the nicest room is to fill out the comment cards commending the front desk clerk on their stellar customer service. You will be surprised to know that comments like that actually make their day.
4. Get to know the management
Getting to know the management staff of the hotel also has its rewards. This is more for those who travel on business and stay in hotels frequently. By getting to know management, you can approach them at any time you see them in the hallways or lobby and let them know how you are like or dislike your stay. Constant feedback is very essential for management, it keeps them on their toes and they know what needs to be tweaked to become more successful. After all, they are in the customer service industry.
