There are a lot of tips about how to find a good photographer. I am not going to cover those in this article. I am going to assume you have done your homework and picked someone you are comfortable with. The following ideas will help you work with your photographer to make everything go smoothly and to ultimately help him preserve your special day.
Meet in person. If you haven't, then schedule a consultation so you can get to know each other. This will help you relax and help him get to know your personality. Ask to see a portfolio. Tell him what you like specifically. This will give him an idea of your style and what you are looking for.
Know the style you want. Hopefully you picked a photographer that matches your style. This is not enough though. Many photographers can shoot in different styles successfully. Spend some time discussing what is important to you. If you want mainly photojournalistic coverage mixed with some formal shots tell him.
Know your contract. You don'twant any surprises. Make sure you understand what is included and who owns the copyrights. You don't want to spend a lot of money only to find out that something is not included. Pay your deposit and your balance on time. It will make a bad impression if you are late paying them. Your photographer will be working closely with you on your wedding day. You want your relationship to be on good terms. On that note, don't negotiate the price with them. Photographers have overhead expenses and many have families to feed. If you can't afford a particular photographer look for a photographer with a similar style with high quality work that may charge less.
Give your photographer a lot of information. Make sure he gets an invitation. Also provide him with an itinerary. This doesn't have to be fancy or formal, even just a hand-written list of the day's events with approximate times will really help out greatly.
Have realistic expectations. Your photographer may have pictures from a beach wedding in his portfolio that you love. He won't be able to recreate those exact pictures at your wedding if it is taking place in the mountains. Your wedding will be unique and your photographer will capture the beauty of your wedding. Keep in mind that a photographer can't photograph something that is not there. There is a trend right now in weddings to have pictures taken of all the little details that make up the whole event. If you want this style of pictures let your photographer know. But, it is also up to you to make sure those little details exist to be photographed. In the same vein, if something is important to you let him know that as well. If you have had something custom made it would be sad not to have a picture of it.
Be on time. Things that are out of your control will happen to make you late. You and your family members should do everything in your power to be on time. Not only is this common courtesy, but it will make your pictures better. You won't be rushed if you are on time. If you are having engagement and bridal portraits made you will certainly want to be on time for these as well. You want your photographer to take the time he needs to make you look your best.
Have engagement and bridal portraits taken. Consider these a trial run working with your photographer. Professional engagement portraits are important because if you choose to send out a picture with your invitations everyone will see them. Another reason is that you will want great pictures to display in your house. Many couples also don't take the opportunity to have their picture taken together very often. These will be cherished for years. Bridal portraits will give you a chance to see your complete look with hair, makeup and dress before your wedding day. They will also give you a chance to take perfect pictures in a relaxed setting. Your wedding day may possibly be stressful.
Become friends with your photographer. Treat your photographer with respect but also get to know him personally. Don't you find that you are more likely to do something better for a friend than a stranger? A photographer that is also a friend is a valuable asset on your wedding day.
Remember that your photographer is going to be working very closely with you on your wedding day and beyond. If you have a great relationship you will get better service and better pictures. Consider you and your photographer as members of a team whose goal is to create a keepsake for generations to come.
