The first step at getting better at anything is practicing it. And no, playing a basketball video game doesn't count. If you are lazy, you might as well not even try to get better, it will just end up being a waste of time. The key to getting better is practicing every day. Finding a court to play at consistently will make things easier. Make sure that the court is somewhere you can go nearly any time of the day. Even if this is an outdoor court or your driveway, it will still work. As long as the hoop is 10 feet high, it is good. Playing every single day and being consistent in your workout is the key.
The biggest key to getting better during the summer is having a set routine that you do each day. Write down a workout that fits your skill level and the amount of time that you have each day, and stick to it. In this workout you should include drills and exercises that cover every aspect of the game. Have shooting and ball handling drills in your set workout. You can even include passing drills if you have a partner to pass to.
You can even just throw the ball of a wall. Most people do not do passing drills so this will get you a head up on the competition. In your dribbling drills, make sure to cover each type of dribble with each hand. In your shooting drills, move all around the court and shoot many shots from each place you can. This will make you a more versatile scorer. Combine dribbling and shooting drills for an even more well rounded workout.
As much as drills to develop your fundamentals are important, so is staying in shape and keeping your mind sharp by playing in organized games. There are likely many men's leagues in your area that are looking for people to join, if you are old enough. If you are not old enough to join a men's league, just go to the local park or court and you will probably find a game to join in. Even if none of these are possible, there is still one more thing you can do to improve your skills.
Perhaps the best way to prepare for the season is to play one-on-one with a friend of a similar or better skill level. This will take your game to a whole new level and could transform it greatly. If you are not known as a scorer, playing lots of one-on-one can improve that.
The biggest key to getting better at basketball is to practice and stay with an every day routine. If you stay determined and work hard, only good things will happen.
