1. Identify, Interact and manage your staff. Give them regular appraisals, meet with them one on one, discuss what they would like to see, get their ideas and views on vision and change. Interact with your staff on a weekly if not daily basis, make them feel that they are providing a valuable contribution to the business/company. Identify who the more driven members of staff are and try to influence them to take some newer perhaps less motivated staff under their wings. Build professional working relationships with your staff.
2. Stop rumors and hearsay. Office talk, gossip and rumors can be damaging as everyone knows that bad word spreads a lot quicker than good word. So nip it in the bud as soon as you get a drift of it. Talk to your employees as you see fit, for example on a one to one basis or perhaps even as team and resolve any underlying problems that caused and stirred this bad word before it gets outside of work.
3. Always set and work to both targets and goals. Set targets alongside your sales team/employees, work out how to get there and then put into action. Set challenges for your teams and employees, they will work a lot harder.
4. Focus on all aspects of the business. Even if you are only a line leader or section manager keep your eyes and ears peeled for what's going on in and around your surroundings. Keep your ear to the ground and keep abreast of issues not just internally within your team or group but also externally.
5. Listen. Sometimes being a better leader or manager is just about listening. Listen to what your employees are saying. Listen to what your suppliers or customers are saying. By listening more you will be able to spot new opportunities and improve upon existing ones.
6. Keep your staff and employees happy. The happier and more comfortable employees are the better they will work, and the more productive they will be.
I hope you have found this article both useful and helpful. Please take these points into consideration and you should over time become and even better Leader or Manager.
