How to Be a Better Patient by Helping Your Doctor
Tips on How to Make Visits with Your Doctor Less Painful
First, visit places like Web MD online and type in your ailments. This helps you become more familiar with your body and will help to identify possible conditions to narrow down the field for your doctor. This way you don't have to wait so long at your visit for your doctor to run through several possibilities that you could've already researched. So, by cutting down your visit time you have actually helped your doctor immensely.
Secondly, don't ever schedule an appointment for Mondays, if you can help it. This is the time when everyone who has gotten sick or injured over the weekend is going to be seen. You are begging for trouble if you intentionally go in on this day when there is no real need. Make your visit for another day f the week, your doctor is already going to have a busy day why monopolize his/her time and yours for an appointment that only needs to take a half an hour or so?
Thirdly, educate yourself on the words that are frequently used. Like for instance, the 'pain scale'. Learn what the difference is between: pulsating, sharp, dull, crushing, shooting, etc. This way you can be more accurate in your descriptions with your doctor and you'll take less time than you would if he/she had to explain them all to you.
Next, we should address lab work. This is the biggest aggravations of both doctor and patient. There are ways to eliminate problems with errors. First always make sure that the technicians label your name and doctor on all lab samples in your presence. And, make sure that you do not dilute your results by eating and drinking before your tests. An empty stomach can make the results more readable and will cut down on retakes.
Lastly, if you have children the best way to get accurate and prompt medical treatment is to keep a journal of sorts. By documenting each and every time they get sick or by recording the way in which they develop their mysterious conditions you can speed up the process for treatment. Doctors love having patients that keep track of their issues. It is not easy when they can't remember specific circumstances and often the conditions can be misdiagnosed as a direct result.
