How to Be a Better Singer

American Idol fever takes hold of us every January. We anxiously await the auditions of the talented, and the not so talented! Amazingly, the lines to participate in the talent competition remain long. The long lines for American Idol should not be surprising.

So many people are "shower" singers. Are you one of them? Do you sing with an imaginary microphone or a broom stick in front of your bedroom mirror? Do you crave the attention of the stage? If so, you may end up in the crowd of people who share this desire.

Whether your wish is to sing on American Idol or just to be able to pass the next stage of Singstar( PS2) , proper techniques can make your dreams come true. There are many things you can do to be a better singer. You should follow these techniques with consistency and enthusiasm. Your goal should be the best singer that you can possibly be!

Use proper body mechanics. You should stand with your shoulders in a relaxed position. Be comfortable! Avoid standing in a rigid position.Always sing from your diaphragm which is located underneath your ribcage. Avoid the common mistakes of singing from your nose or your belly. There are many exercises you can do to strengthen your diaphragmatic muscles.

Use a mirror. Singing in front of a mirror will allow you to see how others see you. It is very easy to pick up on the faults of others because we see others more than we see our own image. Singing is not just about the sound that is coming from your mouth. Singing is a visual presentation. Is your face appealing when you sing? Are you flailing your arms? Increasing your visual appeal can increase your confidence and overall X factor.

Take care of your vocal chords. Always remember to warm up your voice before any singing session. Warming up your voice allows you to achieve and maintain proper vocal chord lubrication. It also helps you to get into your comfort zone. Don't make the mistake of warming up in front of your audience! Your audience will not appreciate a lukewarm performance.

You should also maintain proper hydration levels. This can be achieved by drinking appropriate levels of water and avoiding extremely hot or cold food or liquids.

Other activities which should be avoided include smoking, screaming, and over singing. All of these activities damage your vocal chords.

Take lessons. Taking singing lessons is not a sign of weakness. You open yourself up to new possibilities and techniques. Singing lessons are offered in many formats including books, videos, and face-to-face instruction.

When choosing a method, consider the price, style, and time needed to be successful. A combination of singing lesson methods may work the best.

Find your style. Find suitable songs that match your personal style and vocal ability. It is best to explore many different areas of music. You may find success singing a style that you have never tried before. Be open to new ideas and techniques.

Learn to take criticism. No one likes to hear bad news. No matter how neatly the criticism is wrapped, it can still lead to hard feelings. You should remember that everyone will not give you constructive criticism. No matter what the complaint is, be willing to listen and evaluate the reason behind the comments. There may be truth in a rude comment.

Practice regulary and often. Practice may not make perfect but it can definitely make you better. Even natural ability needs to be cultivated. You should take the time to practice on a regular basis. A commitment to properly practicing can lead to increased ability and confidence.Avoid having boring practices by varying your routine.

There are countless songs to sing and places to sing them! Go to karaoke. Sing at church. Sing at weddings. Sing at funerals. The key thing to remember is to sing! Your commitment to these techniques can be the difference between watching American Idol...and being on American Idol!
