How to Make a Beverage with Coffee and Kool-aid

Making the Drink Called a Foxy

Tyler Harbolt
Well through my experiences in the prison system I have found ways to prepare food and beverages I had never thought possible before. One of the best creations I have found is an iced coffee drink referred to as a foxy. There are many different preparations and recipes for this beverage but all fall upon the same basic principles of coffee and kool-aid. Today I will explain the foxy and how to make it as well as different variations of the drink.

You may be wondering to yourself, "That doesn't sound good at all...coffee and kool-aid in the same drink? Gross." Believe me I had the same thoughts at first too. Once I started drinking one though I gained a love and desire for them. All I'm saying is don't knock it until you try it.

Let's gather up some supplies at your local grocery store. First we will need the two basic ingredients; instant coffee and sweetened kool-aid. For the instant coffee I would recommend choosing Folger's crystals or a Colombian blend that is freeze dried. Don't go with an off brand coffee because it will throw off the entire taste of the drink. As for the kool-aid, I have found that an off brand is actually better. For the flavor of the kool-aid it is recommended that you use either cherry or tropical punch. It is purely a personal choice though. Now for the rest you can add a multitude of things including: jolly ranchers, ice cream, cocoa mix, energy drinks, soda pop, or milk. Personally I recommend getting a 20 oz. pop or an energy drink as a must. When selecting a pop I would recommend a dark pop like Dr. Pepper or a cherry flavored pop like Code Red Mountain Dew. Any pop works but some have a better taste than others. I'll explain later about any other extras you plan on adding.

So you've got your coffee and kool-aid and whatever extras you've chosen and you're at home. Now what? Lets begin by getting a large microwavable mug and a 2 quart pitcher. Take your mug and fill it half way with water and microwave it until it boils. From there take half a cup of instant coffee and mix it in the extremely hot water. Next add 4 cups of kool-aid and mix well until everything is dissolved into the water. Fill the pitcher half the way with ice and pour the kool-aid and coffee mixture into the ice and mix it with the ice until the drink is very cold. There should be some ice still floating around in the pitcher. Now if you have a pop or energy drink take it and pour some into the mug you have mixed the coffee and kool-aid in to get the remains of the syrup type mixture of kool-aid and coffee out. Pour the entire 20 oz. pop into the coffee and kool-aid mixture slowly to ensure that it doesn't go flat or foam up too much. Now you can serve on ice.

If you bought extras then lets figure out what to do with those. We'll start with jolly ranchers or any kind of hard candy. Before putting the jolly ranchers in the drink, they must be melted down. This is possible by crushing the jolly ranchers with a hammer while they are wrapped in something so the candy doesn't fly everywhere. It is up to you how many jolly ranchers you use but no less than 3 should be used if you want to be able to taste them. After they are crushed, put them in a mug with enough water to submerge the candy and microwave the water and candy. This will take only a few seconds for the water to get hot enough to dissolve the candy so make sure to stir the water every few seconds until the candy is completely melted. After that just add it to the foxy.

Ice cream is simple enough, but be sure to add it before adding the pop or it can get real messy. Vanilla, strawberry or orange sherbet is good. This makes a drink sort of like a float or a shake which is very tasty. Milk is basically the same concept except it is liquid and acts more like a creamer. Not a lot of milk should be used if it is. As for the cocoa mix, it should be mixed in with the kool-aid and coffee when they are hot. This may cause the cocoa to lump up but keep stirring until it breaks down.

It is recommended that you do not drink this beverage too late in the day if you intend to go to sleep within the next 4 hours. As for acquiring a taste, it may take a couple tries to understand which pop or kool-aid you may like better in which combination. It is great for parties or as a beverage to get amp'd up before a workout. I would not recommend that you drink one every day because they are not exactly healthy. Otherwise enjoy your beverage.

funny you should mention these1 i too had a small stint in the Penal system and these were my fave drinks to make. i would recommend using sprite as the pop though and tasters choice as the coffee. Where i was at that is how i was taught and that is what most people used. Thesae things really do taste good and although red bull wasnt around in 2002 these things sure seemed to pack more of a kick! i think i may have to go make one of these now, but not for old times sake ;-)
