How a Big Family can Stay Stocked Up on Essential Household Items

It's Easy to Run Out of the Little Things with a Big Family

Ever find yourself running out of toothpaste or dish soap at an inconvenient time? Balancing work and family can often be a daunting task. Finding yourself short on garbage bags on a busy day can bring unwelcome stress into your life. Here is a technique I use to help keep our family stocked up on the necessities.

If you are a monthly grocery shopper, try purchasing the household items while you're already out. It might make your shopping trip a little more heinous but it will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Before you go, make a list of what you need. If you only have a few rolls of toilet paper, pick up a new pack if you have the means. Sometimes you know you have some of something which turns out to be not enough. Save yourself some worry and stock up!

To save money you can consider buying some store brand household supplies. I like the off brand yard and lawn bags. Manufacturers make lawn bags sturdier and they can often compare to higher priced regular kitchen bags. These bags can often be found at a lower cost as well. And as for household cleaners, I usually like to stick to the name brands there. Generic Pine-Sol just doesn't do the trick for me. Experiment for yourself to see what works for your family. You just might save yourself a few extra bucks!

Remember the little things. If you or someone in your household loves to use toothpicks, it can be frustrating to run out. Make sure to consider items like personal products, glue, nails or batteries. Having these items on hand when you need them can be a real lifesaver. Here are some items you may want to add to your list:

Toothpaste and any other dental hygiene products
Personal care and grooming products including deodorant and hair care items
Cleaning products and supplies
Batteries
Baby care items
Hardware such as nails, screws, or glue
Garbage bags
Carpet cleaner or stain remover
Laundry soap and laundry aids
Sewing supplies
Medicine cabinet or first aid kit items
Straws, toothpicks, popsicle sticks and rubber bands ( these always come in handy when you do need them)

Of course, your mileage may vary. Think about the things you were out of that you needed in the past. You can also try keeping a list of these needed items so you can pick them up the next time you go shopping. You'll be glad you have these items on hand and your daily routine will be much smoother.

Toothpicks, straws, popsicle sticks and rubber bands are great items to keep around the house. They come in so handy when you least expect it.
