How to Make Big Money Betting the Kentucky Derby

Denny Nash
The Kentucky Derby is upon us. The funny hats, the mint juleps and the most exciting 2 minutes in sports!

Over the years I've been fortunate enough to hit some very significant mutuals. I had the Monarchos - Invisible Ink exacta that paid $1,229 and Barbaro - Bluegrass Cat for $587.

How did I do it? Not buying into the media hype or listening to the experts. Sure many picked Big Brown in 2008, but who didn't?

Sounds easy enough, but seriously, here's how I came up with those bombshell exactas.

First I looked for a medium to low-odds horse that was not getting much hype. Before those Derby races neither Monarchos nor Barbaro were hyped up. I keyed them (meaning I put them in the Win and Place spot on my bets) with some longshots.

How did I come up with the longshots? Really simple. I looked at the horses that were consistently bet as favorites in every race they ran. Of course they did well otherwise they would not have been qualified for the Kentucky Derby.

Then, I made sure they were ignored in the betting and going to post at big odds.

Now, think about this. If a horse is always a public favorite almost every time it runs. It races well and wins. And its money earned and class qualifies it for the Kentucky Derby. What has he done wrong?

Nothing.

The crowd who know little or anything about the horses will fall for the analysis they hear on TV and follow the "experts" picks. Safe bet right? Hardly. The experts are most always wrong.

This simple formula works mostly on big racing days when you get a big crowd of people who are not horse racing die-hards, but just there for the moment.

So let's review. Take a look at the horses that are well-bet, say around 5-1 and key them with horses that are normally well-bet to favoritism, but for some reason are going to post at huge odds.

This simple no-brainer horse racing system has made me a lot of money over the years and can do the same for you.

Another quick idea is to look for horses that finished no worse than fourth in their last race but ran into some trouble. Such as, stumbled at the start, in traffic, raced 5 wide, or something like that. That can also be the key to big winnings in the Kentucky Derby.

So let's have fun and make a big score - this first Saturday in May 2010!
