How and when to Block or Filter Spam

Keeping Spam Out of Your E-mail Inbox

Allen Bell
Every time an e-mail message is forwarded from one e-mail server to the next, it's possible to subject it to inspection to see if it qualifies as Spam or not. An increasing number of Internet Service Providers are doing just that, and state e-mail policies that indicate they reserve the right to request Spam that shows up on their servers. Some forms of Spam are undeniable and relatively easy to detect (a example, is an e-mail generated by a worm that contains an infected attachment recognizable to anti-virus software), other forms are more difficult to catch (such as highly personalized advertisements carefully crafted to look like real, solicited e-mail).
Some legal scholars raise freedom of speech issues where Spam is concerned. They insist that despite its malicious nature, Spam is a form of protected speech that a carrier cannot decide to accept or reject, only it's intended recipient. Spam is blocked or filtered at many stops along the path from the sender and receiver. There are ways to handle the issue of Spam; some of these ways are as follows:

1. Hire an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to handle your e-mail that offers Spam screening services and Spam controls as part of its services.
2. Consider signing up for a Spam filtering or screening service. For monthly fees that usually run from $3 to $5 a month, you can hire a company that specializes in handling e-mail and removing Spam from your inbox.
3. Install special Spam filtering or screening software on your PC. This kind of software sits between your e-mail program and the Internet and inspects incoming e-mail to decide what gets into your inbox and what goes into the Spam or suspect messages folder.
4. Use your e-mail software's built-in filters and recognition capabilities. Most modern e-mail software includes its own built-in rules definition facilities and junk or adult sender recognition tools (including Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora and other browser based e-mail packages like Netscape, Opera, and so forth).

Ultimately, it comes down to the value you place on your time and money. You should feel free to evaluate your circumstance and come to the appropriate conclusion that works for you. So, go through this material and other informational material you can find to make an informed judgment. Protecting your e-mail from unwanted messages that can fill your inbox can save you valuable time and money.
