If you are not on the Do Not Call list, and you are getting unwanted calls from a particular number, you can block it. However, to avoid others, you may want to join the list. There may be times when you have a falling out with someone, and they simply won't leave you alone. You can also block that number so they cannot get through. They can call with a different number, however. Just remember to report such a person if the calls are dangerous in tone, or are harassing you in any other way. That might include hanging up repeatedly, or calling at odd hours of the night.
In some cases, it is very simple to block a number from calling your home. There is a code that you can use with some phone providers that will block any number you wish, though there may be a one time fee and a limit on the amount of numbers you can block. If you have a landline calling plan, you should be able to find this code by looking in the front of the phone directory provided to you by your phone company. If you can't seem to find it, call and ask them what you have to do to block a particular number.
When it comes to blocking numbers that are coming into your cellular phone, you may have to call your provider to see if there is anything you can do. If telemarketers are calling your cell, they are violating the law, and can be fined a pretty hefty amount for doing so. Your provider can tell you how to go about fixing the problem and reporting them to the proper authorities. There are times when you simply don't have access to call blocking features. Some phone companies have this for all of their customers, and some do not. When you can't get what you need, you can find other gadgets on the market that can help you with this. These are things that you can hook up to your phone line. When an unwanted phone call comes in, you only have to press a few buttons to block that number from calling your home again. You can even use something like this to block all numbers that being with 800 or 888, or even a certain area code.
Or, if you have a number, and you want to find out who the OWNER is, you can find out who owns a phone number with a reverse phone lookup.
