How to Blow Dry Curly Hair Straight

Amanda Furbeck
There is nothing like a salon blow out to get your curly or wavy hair to look soft, sleek, and smooth. The professionals really know how to make your hair type look great! But you can give yourself a great blowout with the right tools, and little knowledge, and some practice. If necessary, you can follow up the blow out with your flat iron, but if you get good enough, you may be able to dry your hair to the style you want with only a hair dryer.
First, you need to assemble your tools. Professional quality tools from a beauty supply store or better yet, from your salon, will work much better than run-of-the-mill, bargain store tools. Keep in mind that your hair stylist can help you choose the best tools for your hair type.

If your hair is long, you'll need a big round brush, a comb, a couple of butterfly clips, a quality blow dryer, and some hair product. For curly or wavy hair that is not too fine, I recommend a straightening balm or cream. If your hair is fine or thin, be careful about weighing it down with heavy products. You may want to opt for a mousse, instead. For shorter hair, you will need a smallish round brush, and probably mousse unless your hair is extremely stubborn.

Begin by blow drying your hair a bit. You'll want your hair to be at least fifty percent dry, if not more. Experiment to find the sweet spot that helps your hair dry faster without getting frizzy. Next, apply your hair product. If you hair is too wet, it will just dilute the hair product. The product won't work as well, and you'll end up using more of it. Then you will burn through it faster and the results won't be as good. Remember to apply the product from roots to ends.

Clip up most of your hair, except for a section at the nape of the neck. This is the hair closest to your collar bone. Hold your hairbrush in your dominant hand, and your hair dryer in your non-dominant hand. This is one of the hardest parts! Reach behind your head, and use the brush to pick up a bit of hair. Pull the section up and away from the back of your next, bringing it in arc motion towards the bottom of your neck while carefully blowing the dryer down on the hairs and in the direction of the ends. Continue on this way as the section moves from the back of your head, up the back of your head, and to the top of your head. Remember to always blow dry so your are aiming down the hair shaft. This closes the cuticle, making hair look and feel soft and healthy. Blow dry the sides in the same manner.

Once you have gotten your hair blown out, you can add a little Shine Serum to make it look extra special, or even hairspray or pomade .It may take a few tries to really get the blow out technique down. If you are having trouble, don't worry! Ask your stylist for help and I'm sure he or she will be glad to give you a few pointers. While you're learning, don't be afraid to quickly run the flatiron over your hair to get it even smoother. Just remember to always use a flatiron spray and to keep the flatiron on the lowest setting possible. Enjoy your blowout and your beautiful, straight hair.
