There is a real simple rule when it comes to weight loss. Burn more calories than you take in. It just makes sense. If you burn more calories than you are eating you will lose weight. It doesn't have to be the end of eating all of your favorite foods either. I have been on the Weight Watchers plan for a year now. I reached my Lifetime status with them after 5 months. I know it seems cliché, but if I can do it, so can you.
This article isn't about being on Weight Watchers though. It is about simple steps you can take to become healthier and lose weight. If you are interested in Weight Watchers you can check out my article Why Weight Watchers Will Work For You and Weight Watchers Low Point Meal and Snack Ideas.
The simplest things can sometimes make the biggest difference. Parking a long ways from the door at stores so you have to walk more, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator are little ways you can make a difference. How about taking the opportunity when you walk to your mailbox to walk around the block.
Most of us do not enjoy exercising, but that can make the biggest difference in your weight loss than you might think. Start setting goals for yourself. Just 20 minutes of some form of exercise a day is a good start. You can work up to adding more. You don't have to join a gym to start exercising. There is plenty of things you can do at home. You can walk, ride a stationery bike or go bike riding.
Plan ahead. When you know you are going to a cookout next weekend and you know what is going to be served there start planning ahead on what you will eat and how much. Arriving prepared is very empowering and will help you make the right decisions.
Start drinking more water. If you are not a regular water drinker then start by setting a goal each day of drinking 2 eight ounce glasses of water and then add to it. Perhaps set a goal of 2 bottled waters a day working up to 4 or more. Do this with fruits and veggies too. If you don't even eat a serving of fruit or veggies normally in a day then make it your goal to eat at least one fruit and one serving of vegetables a day. Add more each day.
The most important thing to remember is to take it one day at a time. If you concentrate on the end result you will lose focus on the here and now and it can sometimes become overwhelming. Just see each day as a new opportunity to make good choices. When you mess up ( I say when because we all do), do not beat yourself up over it. See it as a learning opportunity to help you make better choices in the future. Every day is a new day.
