How to Book the Best Grand Canyon Mule Rides

Mike Beede
One of the most traditional experiences of a visit to the Grand Canyon National Park is the mule ride through the Park. It is featured in all the historic photographs of the Park, one that is memorable for a lifetime. Because of the popularity of these tours, you must reserve your space as early as possible, months or even years in advance. Limited groups are allowed, and booking early is the only way to ensure that you can enjoy this unique way to view the Canyon.

The National Park Service has over 100 years of experience in working with mules, with an excellent record of safety, but there is always an element of risk due to trail conditions and the danger of distracting or disturbing the animals. Therefore careful restrictions are put on the riders to ensure that the trips are safe and happy ones for all concerned.

Please note that riders are limited to those at least 4 feet, 7 inches tall, under 200 pounds in most cases unless prior arrangements are made. Riders must be able to speak and understand English, must not be pregnant, and must not be afraid of heights because of the steep trails with no rails.

You can book mule riding trips to the North Rim or the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park.

South Rim mule trips are available year round. There is one-day Plateau Point trip that departs from the head of Bright Angel Trail at the Park. Overnight rides stay overnight at Phantom Ranch. Two-night rides are also available. North Rim Mule Trips are offered from mid-May to mid-October. A variety of trips are offered, ranging from just a few hours, to overnight.

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is located entirely in Arizona. The weather at the South Rim is less severe than that at the North Rim, which is closed to visitors each winter until mid-May. It is here that you find the majority of visitors to the Grand Canyon, AZ, driven to this area by the convenience of the Grand Canyon Village facilities.

At the South Rim you will find the majority of Park lodgings, restaurants, a bank, post office, and general store for any of your vacation needs. It is highly recommended that you book all lodging and tours well in advance to ensure you have a great experience.
