How to Make Book Shelves

Step by Step Instructions on Making the Easiest Books Shelves Ever

You've just moved into a house, or you're renting a room and you don't have a lot of money. You have all of the necesities: a couch, a chair, a table, and even a place to put your TV. But do you have a books shelf, or as my grandmother liked to call it, a knick knack holder? Many people don't see the need for such things. They don't see the need to have books, so why do they need a book shelf. The reasonwe need shelves, is to put things out on display we want peopel to see or that will make us feel better and make it more like home. You can put up those beads you got on mardis gras, the bowl that you found that looks so good, or even the miscelaneous award you got at work. Shelves always come in handy and you don't need to go to one of the "mart" stores and spen dridiculous money on them.

Go rummaging around and find 2 long boards. If you want to be really picky, go to a lumber place like Home Depot or Loewes and get two boards from there. If you're being picky, you can get the exact kind of wood you want. you can then stain and paint the pieces of wood that you bought. However, you don't need to go through all of that unless you really want to. Preferably, these would be 2 2 X 6 pieces. You're going to need to find the longest ones you can for a good book shelf. An important item of note here: If you want long books shelves, get long boards. If you want shorter book shelves, get shorter boards.

Get a hold of a few cinder blocks; the ones with the 2 holes in it are the best for a bookshelf. These cinder blocks, as well as the boards, can be found behind most strip malls and stores oddly enough. You can also find these in old abandoned work sites, or a number of maintenance shops will have these things lying about. If you're really in a bind, and can't find anything at all. The dumpsters of the world are wonderfully prevalent with all these items. When the 2 hole cinder blocks are stood one end, they are the exact size of some of the larger books you will have in your book shelf.

Place two of the cinder blocks upright the length of the boards. The easiest way to figure out the lengths of the boards are to lay the board down. Mark where the edges are and then place the outside edge of the block on those marks. Then lay the board down on top of these blocks. Place two more cinder blocks directly; I stress that, directly above the cinder blocks. These top two blocks will put enough pressure to keep the whole structure surprisingly sturdy. Place the second board atop the top cinder blocks. You now have a cinder block book case. The really nice part about this book case, is that if you use your imagination you can create all sorts of wall units with it, and how high it goes is up to you. In addition to that, this can be any color you want. A few cans of spray paint and the entire thing is a different color. There is no sanding or varnishing needed.

Build this close to the wall, and you'll be set. There's a place for stuff on the ground below the 1st board. This is the best place for books to cover up the ground part, so it looks like it's a bookcase that has an actual floor. The next level can be books as well if you'd like. Finally, the top of the book case is sturdy enough to pile clothes on, put a stereo, a laptop or smaller computer, or just toss some knick knacks on it. The easiest
