Write regularly in your blog. If you only write a blog post once a week it won't have as many visitors as a blog that has entries that are made daily.
Make comments on other blogs that have the same subjects that your blog does. Choose blogs that allow you to enter your URL in the comment section. By having your URL attached to your name after the blog comment is posted it will provide a direct link to your blog from that blog.
Find the most popular blogs on Technorati and make friends with those bloggers via comments or forums that they frequent. By making friends you will increase your own popularity.
Find a blog post you like on another popular blog and write a blog post about it on your blog - in your own words. Don't forget to have a link to the original post you are writing about in your blog post. The result will be a "ping back". If the other blog allows ping backs you will see your blog post mentioned in the comments section of the original blog post. That will result in one more link that will be pointing to your blog.
As you can tell by now you need to increase the amount of links that are pointing to your blog. This helps the search engines find you. The more links, the greater the chances of someone searching on a phrase or term on a search engine will end up on your blog.
Gone are the days of link exchanges where you email someone asking to exchange links. Nowadays search engines are looking for one way organic links also known as natural linking. The ping back technique I mentioned above is the best way to achieve organic linking.
If you comment on another blog at least once or twice a day you can expect your Alexa popularity ranking to go up in a few weeks. The lower your Alexa number (the more popular you are) is the more offers for advertising and paid blog posts you will get.
Keep in mind that having a popular blog cannot be achieved on your own, you will need to socialize with other bloggers online. Join a blog based message board or blogging community like Blogcatalog.
Expect to spend at least one hour each day just developing links pointing towards your blog. In no time at all you will notice an increase of visitors to your blog. You will be well on your way to becoming popular.
