Botulinum toxin is poison to those of you that are wondering. It is the same clostridium botulinum bacterium that causes a person to be deathly ill from ingesting this through food. The reason it causes such a life-threatening effect when eaten, is that it causes muscles to become paralyzed and also gets into your muscles that are responsible for breathing. This toxin with further research however, has shown uses for type A which is Botox. Botox can be injected directly into frown lines, and uncontrolled reflexes such as blinking, hyperhidrosis which is excessive sweating, and also migraine headaches.
This drug has even been known to control gastroparesis which is impaired stomach emptying. When the injection is given directly into the pylorus which is the opening that joins the small intestine to the stomach, gastroparesis has been found to improve quite a bit.
Botulinum or botox injections are a help to diabetic people. What they do is help with nerve pains in those that have neuropathy problems. The neuropathy that is best treated by botulinum toxin injections is peripheral neuropathy. There are at least 20 or 30 percent of people that are affected with peripheral neuropathy. When a botox injection is placed for example, directly into the affected foot with neuropathy, it has been known to block the pains from occuring, and as a result, the person affected feels relief that they wouldn't have otherwise.
In some cases, botulinum toxin injections injected directly into the bladder area have been discovered in treating overactive bladder problems for many people. The study showed that there were some side effects though none were serious.
Botulinum toxin injections are also used for people that have muscle spasms. The injections are placed right into the area that is responsible for causing spasms. What the botulinum toxin does is cause the muscle to lose its strength, and that in turn causes the muscle to relax and straighten back into the correct positions. The injections typically take a week or two in order to take effect, and the treatment is good for at least 6 months or possibly a bit longer than that.
A person can develop a resistance to botulinum toxin injections in some cases. At that point, the treatments are no longer effective for whichever area has been treated.
Anyone who is pregnant should not take botulinum toxin injections. This can pose a threat to an unborn child. Also, anyone taking certain medications should not be using botulinum toxin injections but find other alternatives instead.
