How to Make Boxes for Party Favors

Create Your Own Favor Boxes for Your Next Party

Wendy Roltgen
A great project for kids and adults, making a one-of-a-kind party favors box is a fun way to leave a lasting impression on guests. Favor boxes of various sizes can be made using cardstock or heavier paper.

Ideal for holding treats for child's birthday party, favor boxes are fun and easy to make. Favor boxes also make interesting place settings for dinner parties, simply write the name of each guest on the box and fill with treats such as an after dinner mint or chocolates.

What Materials You Need for a Favor Box

To make a favor box, you will need paper, a ruler, scissors, glue, tape, paper punch and ribbon or string. If you plan to decorate, you may also want to have some stickers, markers and other embellishments on hand. When selecting paper for your favor box, choose papers that fit the occasion. For a box that will be used at a birthday party, pick out paper with a birthday design. Or for wedding favors, try using a soft floral paper or paper in the wedding colors.

Making the Favor Box

To make the favor box, first fold the piece of cardstock in half. Unfold the paper. You will now see one crease in the middle of the paper. Now you need to fold each half of the paper in half. To do this, take the outside edge of the left half and fold that half section so the paper lines up with the middle crease. Repeat for the right side. Now unfold the paper. You will now see four creases in the paper.

Now fold the paper in thirds in the opposite direction of the folds you did originally. Unfold the piece of paper. You should now see a grid of 12 boxes on the paper. As you look at the creases in the piece of paper, the middle row will serve as the walls of the box. The bottom row will serve as the base and the top row will be the top of the box.

Take your scissors and cut along the crease lines at the bottom of the box until you reach the first horizontal crease. Be careful to not cut in the middle section of the card stock. Then take the scissors and cut along the vertical creases at the top of the paper until you reach the closest horizontal crease. Cut the second and fourth top panels so they are in the shape of a triangle. The two triangle flaps will serve as the top closing for the party favor box.

Now it is time to fold your favor box. Working from the left to the right, take the first square in the bottom panel and fold so it is now at a ninety-degree angle. Place glue on top of the square and stick the next square on top to form the first half of the favor box. Now place glue on top the second bottom square and stick the third square on top. Repeat for the fourth and final square of the box. Use tape to close the open edge of the favor box.

The top closes by folding in the first and third top flaps and then punch a hole in the triangle flaps and tie closed with ribbon. You now have a complete favor box perfect for your next party.

A project the whole family can participate in, this easy craft project is one that may even become a new family tradition. So why not make your next party memorable, with your own unique party favor box.
