How to Break Out of a Bad Mood

Sean Meehan
Everyone has a bad day now and then. Sometimes, we know why we're feeling down when this happens. Fights with the significant other or a reprimand from the boss are good ways to ruin your mood. But other times, we just feel rotten for no real reason. Either way, by changing your thoughts from abstractions to realities, you will feel better. Try one of these simple methods for a pick me up the next time you're feeling poorly.

1. Give your thoughts a name.

Sometimes it helps to think about why we're upset. This seems too simple, I know, but often times when we're upset about something we don't stop to think why. Sure, your boss told you your work wasn't up to par. But why did this anger you? Was it because you were disappointed in yourself, or because your boss didn't see how hard you worked? Think your problems through like this and you'll learn how to fix what's bothering you.

2. Write down your favorite things. Then do something on your list.

You may just need to be distracted from your bad mood. A good way to do this is to make a list of everything you love doing. Then, find something on the list that's reasonably easy to fulfill, and do it. You'll forget about your problems in no time.

3. Smile.

It's really as simple as that. Studies show that smiling can improve your mood instantly. So next time you're feeling down in the dumps, force yourself to smile for a minute or two.

4. Take you money and your keys out of your pocket.

Remove everything you're carrying and set it far away from you. Sit down where you can't touch it but where you can still see it. Realize that your livelihood, represented by these objects, is still there even when you aren't directly in contact with it. Then, think about how to get back to your money and keys. You'll have to get up and go get them. Let this exercise remind you that the key to success is taking action.

5. Try something new.

Take a different route home or order food for dinner that you've never tried before. Just do something out of the ordinary. Breaking out of your routine will make your mind think differently, which will lead you to an improved outlook on life.

So the next time you're feeling under the weather, try one of these tricks. Just thinking about something different is sure to help you out.
