How to Break Up with Someone

Denise

It happens. All relationships don't last, because it's meant to be a learning experience. So, you have to let your boyfriend or girlfriend go. Here's how to do that properly.

Private Place

Choose a private place to let them down easily. Telling them publicly is in bad taste. You don't want to air your business in front of strangers. However, don't let it be too private a place where you can be talked out of it or threatened.

Right Time

There is a time and place for everything. Don't pick a party, holiday or other special occasion to break the news. That is just cruel. The person dumped might just learn to hate that holiday for the rest of their lives.

In Person

Breaking up by phone, email, letter or text message is just plain lame. Have the decency to look the person in the face to tell them. You've loved them once, so show that compassion once more.

Tell The Truth With Love

Tell them why you're breaking up with them. If you suspect they are cheating, ask them first before you break up with them. Don't just break up with them without knowing all the facts.

Don't Freak Out

There is always the possibility that they won't take it well. If he or she is weepy or angry, just keep your calm and don't let it escalate into something worse. Before you ever break up with someone, don't go telling your friends and family. Wait until the relationship is over.

One Last Bit Of Advice

Really think about your relationship. Will your life really be better without your mate in it? Once you break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend nine times out of ten, you cannot come crawling back. Your ex would have moved on with their life. So, take this business of breaking up very seriously. Make sure your reasons are not petty like finding someone else better-looking, richer and more popular than the one you are with. Don't break up for small reasons like his or her snorting laugh, boring sense of humor, or anything else you find irritating now that you were alright with prior to agreeing to be in a relationship with that person. Don't be too quick to give up on a person if they became ill or disabled. How would you want to be treated? Should your mate give up on you that way?
