How to Bring Out Your Inner Child

Lauren Romano
The older we get, the more we seem to forget the simple joys of childhood. Here are some simple ways to still hold the maturity of an adult while getting back in touch with your inner child.

Drink hot chocolate with A LOT of marshmallows. If you have the urge to learn something new, try making your own hot chocolate instead of the powder mix.

Play video games. Who doesn't love Tetris?! There a ton of video games from bowling and pool to brain training video games. There's something for everyone. If you are looking to be an adult and save some money, many game stores will have a discount section. You can also check amazon.com.

Finish this sentence..."I always wanted to ." Got it? Now go and do it.

Go out and play sports. Whether it's kicking a soccer ball around or going to the batting cages, it's fun and you get great exercise. If you're feeling extra adventurous, see if there is a rock climbing wall or a trapeze school near your area.

Make funny faces to someone you know (or someone you don't). When they turn around and look at you, just look at them like you have no idea what the problem is.

Find a patch of grass, lay down, look up at the stars and just think. Make sure you do it in a place where you won't have strangers interrupting your thoughts every five minutes to see if you're breathing.

Dance and/or sing like a fool. In public. Possibly while you're in a car and stopped at a red light. Don't do this if you're driving a car for the safety of yourself and everyone around you. Hey, when you were a kid you probably didn't care where you were you just broke out dancing because you felt like it. Besides, it will put a smile on the face of the person in the car next to you and it will make that red light seem a lot shorter.

Eat junk food for breakfast. Now I wouldn't do this often, but once in awhile is okay. I say go for ice cream. If you don't want to go that far, have a bowl of the cereal you loved as a kid. When was the last time you actually ate Froot Loops?

Go to a place you loved to go as a child. Go to a carnival or the boardwalk and play some games, go on the rides, and get some cotton candy. Go to the zoo and walk around or head to the nearest park and go on the swings.

Put your hair in pigtails. Not recommended for men.

Put some crazy makeup on yourself. Remember playing with makeup as a kid? You had eyeshadow into your eyebrows, lipstick halfway up your cheeks and glitter everywhere. You didn't care how odd it looked, all you knew is that you were having a great time and that is what made you feel beautiful. Again, not recommended for men.

Eat with your hands and not care about looking like a mess. Barbecue sauce on your nose? Who cares. However, I wouldn't go and do this in public.

Buy a toy you had as a kid. Whether you get it off ebay, get it at a flea market or just get a new version at a toy store, it's sure to bring back memories.

If you have snow, go play in it. Have a snowball fight, make a snowman or make snow angels. Here is an adult tip. Spray your pants with Scotchgard before you go out to keep some of the water from soaking into them.

Get up on a Saturday morning and watch cartoons in your pajamas. Whatever dvd rental service you deal with should have some in stock. If not, check out YouTube. Retrojunk has a great stock of vintage commercials and facts about your favorite vintage shows.

Play with bubbles. Use those bubble wands, go outside and just make bubbles and watch them float around.

Acting like a child once in awhile doesn't mean that you are any less mature then the adult that you are. Consider it lightening your load of every day stress and temporarily bringing back the time and feelings when everything was more simple.

Oh yes, the good old days! I take my 3 year old to Gymboree and at the end of every class the instructor brings out a parachute which reminds me of fun I had as a child. Maybe I should no longer restrain myself from running under the parachute with all of the 3 year olds.

Great suggestions! I liked that you suggested making your own hot chocolate - it's actually really easy, but so few people do it.

How adorable. Sad we forget to do some of these things. They keep us young!

These are great suggestions! I've met a lot of people that seem to have forgotten how to have fun. I thinks it's important to let loose and just be a kid again sometimes. It's so easy to get so wrapped up in living life that we forget to enjoy it!
