How to Make a Broom Hanger

Linda Riggs
I happen to own a Jig saw and it is amazing how many craft projects this saw helps me complete. Many people get a good saw like this and feel a bit apprehensive about using it. Large projects often seem a bit too overwhelming to someone that has never worked with power tools. Making a broom hanger is such a simple craft project. It is the ideal project to take on if you are just getting started with using power tools and saws.

If you do not have a Jig saw or any power tools, you can still make this broom hanger by enlisting a little help from the nearest hardware store or lumber mill. You could also just ask someone that you know to make the one cut that is necessary for making the broom hanger. To get started you will only need a few inexpensive items and you can find anything you might need for this project by looking here.

Items Needed To Make Broom Hanger
1. 2 pieces of wood - each should be about 1 x 2 x 12 inches
2. 2 3/4 inch screws
3. 2 thumb tacks
4. A foot of fine flexible wire
5. A Jig saw
6. Scissors
7. A screw driver or power drill
8. Paint or markers

Getting Started
The first thing you should do is take a look at the broom hanger pictured with this article to get an idea of how you want to cut the notch in your wood. As you can see, you need to cut your notch deep enough for your broom handle to slip into it easily. You will also want to be very careful not to cut your notch so deep into the wood that the wood becomes fragile or will break easily.

You should use a Jig saw to make the cut of your notch for the broom handle. If you do not own a saw or do not have any power tools, just take one of your pieces of wood to someone that has tools and knows how to use them. Have them cut a single notch in the center of your wood.

Assembling The Broom Hanger
Once you have the notch cut in your first piece of wood, you will need to attach it to your second piece of wood. If you have a power drill you can safe some energy and use it to screw the wood together from the back side of your flat second piece into the small sides of your first piece. You can also do it the old fashioned way and just use your screw driver.

After you have the two pieces of wood screwed together, you will want to take both of your thumb tacks and push them into the back of the broom hanger. Space the thumb tacks about six inches apart in the center of the back of the broom hanger. Push the thumb tacks in most of the way but leave enough space to wrap your wire around them.

Take your wire and center it between the two thumb tacks and cut away the excess wire if it is too much to work with. Now, wrap each end of the wire around each thumb tack. Use your scissors to cut off any excess wire from each end and then push your thumb tacks into the back of the broom handle the rest of the way. Be sure to push the thumb tacks in very firmly so that they don't pop out when you hang your broom hanger.

All that is left to do is decorate the broom hanger any way you like. Use the wire that you added to the back of the broom hanger to hang it somewhere that you can display it proudly. This broom hanger craft project can also be used to make hangers for mops or yard tools and it makes a great gift. I hope you enjoyed this simple craft project.
