How to Make a Bruno Halloween Costume

J Budd, RN
The latest mock-documentary by comedian Sasha Baron Cohen, Bruno, scored the number one spot at the box office the weekend it opened. If Bruno turns out to be just as popular as Cohen's other alter ego, Borat, we could see what may end up being the most popular Halloween costume of 2009. In fact, I recently spoke to an employee at a Party City store in Northern New Jersey about a Bruno Halloween costume. The employee spoke to her manager and informed me that the store will indeed be getting in a Bruno Halloween costume most likely by the end of August.

But why buy what you can put together yourself?

How To Make a Bruno Halloween Costume: The clothes

Bruno is a stereotypical flamboyant gay man from Austria who enjoys clothes that accent his body, especially arms and legs. The bottoms need to be short shorts, preferably in black, and just covering your gluteus maximus. Material can be what your budget allows: leather, spandex, or nylon/spandex blend. As for the shirt, you will need a fitted sleeveless tee in black or mostly black. If you can, try to go for a black and white tiger stripe print tee.

How To Make a Bruno Halloween Costume: Hair and accessories

Clothing alone does not make you Bruno this Halloween. You need the right hairstyle and accessories. For the hair, you will need a blond with brown highlights wig, at least 2-3 inches above the shoulder in length. Bruno's haircut is a 'shag' style, so you can make your wig stylishly messy and comb to one side or straight toward the face.

Bruno wears black leather boots that have a buckle around the ankle part and a ½ - one inch heel. Boots should be mid calf height. Bruno's jewelry is very punk with black leather and silver bracelets and one or two silver rings.

How To Make a Bruno Halloween Costume: Props

If you really want to stand out with your Bruno Halloween costume, a few props that refer back to the movie can help. Since Bruno interviews people in the film, you may want to carry a hand held microphone. Bruno also uses a variety of adult sex toys in the film, so depending on how daring you are, you can carry some of these.

How To Make a Bruno Halloween Costume: Strike a pose with attitude

As Madonna said, Strike a pose. There's nothing to it. Bruno may be a failed model/fashionista in Europe, but that doesn't stop him from posing like one for the cameras in America. If you want to have a picture taken of you in your Bruno Halloween costume, you need to look the part and show the attitude. Try re-creating some of the promo pictures for Bruno like the ones seen here. For general poses, stand with legs just a bit wider than shoulder length, place hands on hips, and give a piercing glance over the shoulder or to your left or right.
