Tips and Advice on How to Save Money

Saving money is something that almost everyone will admit that they need to do or need to do more. But, it is difficult for many people to save money for various reasons. Some of these reasons are based on unchangeable realties but some are not. The first step to saving money is to gain control over your money.

If you want to save money the first place to start is with a budget. This is simple, you can't save money if you don't know where it is going. Sit down and write down the amounts that you will need to cover your expenses each month. (Great budget templates are available from numerous sources online) Once you have determined the mount that you need to spend add an extra category for emergencies. This emergency category is for things such as repairing a flat tire, fixing a leaking pipe, and other small tasks that might come up. This money is to be saved and not spent each month unless it is necessary.

Now that you have determined how much you need to pay your bills, determine if you can reduce your bills. Cell phones, cable bills and car insurance are three areas that most people could find savings with a little work (and thus find money to save). Look at reducing your entertainment and dining out costs as well. If you are able to find savings then make changes to your budget expenses.

Now look at the money that you have coming into your home. If you extra income then jump up and click your heels together, you are doing better than many! If you don't have enough money to cover expenses then you have a problem. Running a household deficit each month simply has to stop, you aren't Congress. It is either time to sell a car, turn off the cable / cell phone, sell your house or make more money. If you have nothing with payments to sell then you need to get a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th job. I've had up to three (while in college) and it never hurt me one bit.

Once you get income over your expense level it is time to save money. Open a savings account in a bank that is inconvenient for you to save money in. A small credit union on the other side of town (or the next town) would be ideal. You want a standard savings account without check writing privileges and without a debit card. This is so you can save money in the account and not spend it without effort. Setup an automatic deposit from your paycheck to the bank and let the money build. Use the money to pay down debts, invest for your retirement, or other worthy goals as the money builds.
